How much weight can a loft bed hold?

What is the difference between a bunk bed and a loft bed?

Simple: bunk beds stack two sleeping spaces, while loft beds elevate a single bed to open floor space below.

Loft beds are high beds for adults. They offer flexibility to fit your lifestyle with storage, a desk, or even a mini lounge area underneath. This makes them a bit more versatile than their bunk bed cousins. A loft bed with desk for adults, for example, swaps the bottom bunk for a functional workspace, perfect for city dwellers or small-space living enthusiasts.

While bunk beds are a great option for guest rooms or vacation homes, loft beds are the way to go for solo sleepers in smaller spaces.

Can I use any mattress on a loft bed?

Not all loft bed mattresses are created equal. When you’re choosing a mattress for your loft bed, make sure you keep the guardrail height in mind. Your guardrails should be at least 5 inches taller than your mattress’s thickness to ensure safe sleeping.

For example, many of Bunk Beds for Adults' wooden loft beds have 14” tall guardrails, so we’d recommend a mattress no thicker than 9 inches. Stick with a low-profile mattress, and you’ll be snoozing happily without sacrificing comfort or safety.
